DAY 19
For today, we will have a debate. Throughout the novel, there is a burning question of survival. The question we will focus on is: WAS IT RIGHT OF CRABBE TO RUN AWAY?
Crabbe ran away. Why do you think he did so? Should he have? What about all the people around him, did they deserve to suffer? The question is: Should Crabbe have run away? Was it a right thing to do on his part? For the first half, the class will be divided into two groups onto two sides: PRO and CON. Each team will choose one person to take notes. These notes will be handed in at the end of the debate. In addition, each team will choose two people to present their argument and one person to respond. We will be circulating around the room to see if everybody is participating; you will lose marks if you are not. In addition, even if you are not taking notes or speaking initially, when there is a collaborative discussion, you are expected to speak, since this is a summative assignment. Your assignment is as follows:
PRO
If you are on the pro side, you will argue that Crabbe did do the right thing in running away. You will justify this with reasons from the novel. You may want to look at his reasons for running away, and why it was a good idea. You may also want to look at what he may have learned from this.
CON
If you are on the con side, you will argue that Crabbe did not do the right thing in running away. You will justify this with reasons from the novel. You may want to look at the feelings of those he left behind and the effect he had on them. You may also want to look at his future if he had not run away.
In the second half of the class, each, the pro and con side will pick two speakers. Each of them will present their arguments for their side. As the other side speaks, you may want your note taker to write down what they are saying, in order to argue against that team. Both teams will then have about two minutes to collaborate and decide how to respond. Then, each team will choose another speaker (different from the two that have already spoken) and they will respond to the argument. Finally, the floor will be opened up to both teams for a collaborative discussion, and finally we will have a vote.
