Final Assessment
Over the next three days, you will work on your final assignment for the novel. The Assessment will consist of a number of activities you must complete and hand in. There are specific goals you are expected to meet each day. The fourth day will consist of presentations if your group has any.
Steps to Follow
- Organize yourself into your groups. You may work in groups of 4.
- Read through the topics below.
- As a group, decide on the activities you'd like to complete.
- Complete the proposal sheet, and take it to your teacher.
- Once your teacher, approves your proposal, begin working.
Below, you have a list of assignments. Each assignment has a point value beside it. While the simpler and shorter assignments have fewer points, the more difficult and longer assignments have greater points. You may choose any number of assignments you wish. However, the total point value of all assignments must be 100. For each assignment, you must show us your rough copy before beginning your good copy. You will receive marks for your rough work. All assignments must be handed in on Day 18. You will lose 5 marks on the overall mark (out of 100) for every class that it is late. You must hand in the following:

Topics
- You have just finished reading the novel entirely through Crabbe’s eyes. Write a journal with a minimum of 4 entries from another character’s point of view. This could include Mary, Crabbe’s mother, or father, or a teacher if you wish. Include their feelings, thoughts and perhaps what they are going through. If you are writing from Mary’s point of view, you may do no more of one entry before you find Crabbe. If you are doing the entries from another character’s point of view, you may only write from when Crabbe disappears. Each entry must be between 250-300 words. – 40 points
- Create a crossword puzzle for the novel. You must present this to the class. You must have a minimum of 15 words. You must include an answer key as well (only for the teacher). Please refer to this site if you need any help: http://www.puzzle-maker.com/ – 10 points
- Write a newspaper article for one of the key events in the novel. Your article must be at least 300 words, it must be in proper newspaper article form and style, and it must include an appropriate picture with caption. – 20 points
- Create a collage for the novel. Choose at least ten pictures or words of key symbols, characters, setting, themes, etc that relate to the novel. Your collage must also have a title, heading, or slogan. With your collage, include a paragraph (250 words) that explains why each picture in your collage is significant. This assignment will also include a short presentation where you will explain your collage to the class. – 40 points
- Write a letter to William Bell explaining your opinion on his novel, Crabbe. What did you like about the novel? What would you change? What was your favourite part? Why? Would you recommend this novel to a friend? Why or why not? Use specific examples from the text to support your opinion. Your letter must be at least 300 words long and must be in letter style. – 20 points
- If you were making the novel Crabbe into a movie, what 8 key events would you include? Draw or find pictures to represent the scene. Assemble them in storyboard format and write a caption underneath each picture that explains the scene (2-3 sentences). – 30 points
- Create a board game for the novel. It must test the knowledge of the reader. It must have pieces, a board, questions, rules and connect to the novel. – 60 points
- Pretend you are William Bell and you have just written Crabbe and you wish to have it published. Create a brochure that you would send to publishers that would “advertise” your novel. Make sure you include information about plot, setting, characters, theme etc, as well as appropriate graphics. – 35 points
- Find a news article that deals with the theme of survival. Summarize the article (what is it about? This part should be no longer than one third of the original article), explain how it deals with the theme of survival and compare it with Crabbe. Your written assignment should be at least 400 words. You must include the article with your assignment. – 30 points
- Design a new cover for the novel, Crabbe. Make sure your book cover has pictures or graphics that relate to the novel. Please include a 200-word paragraph explaining why your new novel cover is so effective. In addition, do not forget to include information on both flaps and on the back. – 40 points
- Design a CD cover for the music to the movie Crabbe and write the title song. You can perform the song for the class if you wish. With your CD cover, please include a paragraph that explains why you chose to design the cover the way you did. – 20 points
- Act out Crabbe in 5 minutes. You must show evidence of planning and arrange for presentation time to the class. You will need to include props in your presentation. – 30 points
- Draw a map of the place where Crabbe went when he ran away. On your map, clearly mark where at least 7 events took place. On a separate sheet of paper, explain why those 7 events are so important. Make sure you use colour on your map and mark his journey in a bold colour. – 30 points
- Write a dialogue (2 pages in length) between Crabbe and Mary or Crabbe and his parents that is not already in the novel. For example, Crabbe tries to convince Mary to come home with him or Crabbe calls his parents from the hospital to let them know where he is. Present it to the class. – 20 points
